OPEN PROJECTS

Interested chapters should submit the form 502 - Chapter Application to Acquire a Project to Projects.  Your chapter is not guaranteed to receive a project (we often have multiple applications for the same project), so please do not start on the project before obtaining official notification that your chapter has been assigned the project.  Chapters may want to apply for more than one project to increase their chances of receiving a project.

The Chapter Applications submitted for open projects will be reviewed one time each month.  To be considered for the next round of reviews, chapters should submit their chapter application to a EWB-USA project manager  by the submission date listed below.  Chapters will be notified via e-mail within 3-4 weeks if they received the project.  Once a project has been assigned to a chapter, the project is removed from the open section of this website (this usually happens the day after the submission date listed below).

Click here for future submission dates

  • Chapters interested in a project must read Section 5 of the EWB-USA Sourcebook.
  • Chapters taking on a project are expected to commit to that country/region for several years, not just for the length of this one project.
  • Chapters wanting projects to work on in the USA or on Senior Design Projects should see our Research Projects section.
  • Chapters without a project will be given preference when assigning projects.
  • Chapters must be established EWB-USA chapters and must have a signed chapter agreement with EWB-USA to receive a project.

Project applications have been posted without contact information so that submitters are not bombarded with questions.  Please do not contact the project submitter!

The projects listed below have been approved by the Technical Advisory Committee but have not yet been assigned to a Chapter. Current Open Project List as of  July 1, 2008:

Cameroon, Nkuv The road from Kumbo to Nkuv is in the northwest part of the country of Cameroon. Cameroon is located in Central and West Africa. The road is approximately 40 kilometers in length and about 7 kilometers is in poor condition. Travel by motorized vehicle is difficult through these portions, and hazardous at best and impassable during times of heavy rainfall. With the proposed road improvements, there will be significant benefit to the inhabitants of the small community of Nkuv. These benefits include expedited access to health care facilities in Kumbo and the realization of business development opportunities in Nkuv.  Project Application  ARC Review

All Projects

Brazil, Ribeira The Rhythm of Hope in Brazil, in cooperation with the Instituto de Cultura Brasil Italia Europa, wishes to construct a theatre in Ribeira at Rua Julio David 57, with the primary object of serving excluded youth in the community of the Cidade Baixa (the low city), which is currently without a permanent area for cultural activities such as theater, music, cinema, dance, art or lectures. Cidade Baixa is a poor and degraded area. In our efforts to expand cultural horizons there, the Institute of Culture Brazil Italy Europe (ICBIE) needs a theater to showcase the talents of the students to engender pride and self-esteem.  Project Application  ARC Review
Cambodia, Talle Batti The 3 villages of the Talle Batti community have a problem with water supply. There is a lack of clean water. Due to the use of dirty drinking water there are a lot of diseases in the village and there still is a high percentage of child mortality. CDO is searching for alternative solutions to cope with this problem as previous solutions did not seem to work properly (water pumps and water filter).  Project Application  ARC Review
Cameroon, Buea Over 70% of the local population have acute potable water shortages and the problems are further compounded by its very poor quality. 80% of the people are constantly suffering from water related diseases. This project will assist to provide potable and save drinking water to the rural communities of Upper Bonduma, Woteva and Lysoka. A Buea Watershed Council will be formed to support the restoration of the watershed. Key activities will include education, restoration and construction.  Project Application  ARC Review

Dominican Republic, Batey Cojobal The Batey Relief Alliance proposes to build a permanent extension to the current 30-foot mobile medical clinic stationed inside Batey Cojobal, an impoverished community founded around the sugar cane plantation industry in the Dominican Republic. Since the installation of the clinic in 2003, the demand for healthcare in the region has increased three-fold, revealing the serious limitations of the clinic due to its small size.  Project Application  ARC Review
Ecuador, Santo Domingo The Association of the blind, Light and Shade requests the construction of a two-story educational and school for the blind in Santo Domingo, Ecuador. The center will be utilized for current projects and activities by its blind and low vision members. A large room is necessary for educational purposes such as: classes in Braille, Orientation and Mobility, computation, craft workshops, music, soccer and physical fitness, meetings and seminars. The center will also be used for a variety of income generating activities including for the production of their own line of cleaning products.  Project Application  ARC Review
Fiji, Buca During the summer of 2007 typhoid fever hit the villages of Buca and Vunikura very hard, upon my inspection I discovered that their water systems were surface water derived and had no filtration present. We would like to install the slow sand filtering system as it is a system that is easily taught to the villagers and can be maintained with the products and skill sets available in the villages. The water systems have storage tanks of approximately 80,000 liters.  Project Application  ARC Review
Gambia, Galleh Manda The road connecting the village of Galleh Manda to the main road is in very poor condition prohibiting access to healthcare, education, markets, transportation and other essentials. Previous work done on the road by villagers has only exacerbated the problem. With the help of an EWB construction project, the citizens of Galleh Manda would learn to correctly and efficiently repair their road themselves using local materials, quite literally providing them with a road to further development.  Project Application  ARC Review
Gambia, Kuntaur The Kuntaur Road of Niamina East is generally in poor condition, but during the summer rainy season, the approximately 4km stretch that is closest to the river floods and remains underwater for almost six months. The area needs the portion of the road that goes from the village of Bani to the dock for Kuntaur to be repaired and accessible year-round. This would provide the residents with better access to health care, education, markets, transportation, food, and other essentials.  Project Application  ARC Review
Gambia, MBollet The Villages of (Sam) Mbollet live in extreme poverty, are all farmers attempting to farm on Arid rain fed lands which are utterly exhausted of nutrients and therefore biologically unable to produce adequate crops. The soils are so depleted of nutrients that even if the rains are good, the households still go hungry. There is no Fertilizer available in The Gambia and the farmers do not have the knowledge to successfully make organic composts, neither do they have adequate ploughs to incorporate such organic matter into the soils. There is no running water supply,* no safe drinking water + *no sanitation, they have no medicines and lack access to basic medical services. There is no power supply and not a single motorized vehicle, there is no clinic and the nearest school is 2kms away though many families cant afford the school fee’s. This project of micro – irrigation and rainwater harvesting will benefit the whole village with increased income per household, reduced hunger, improved nutritional state and micro enterprises and goes a long way to the village attaining self-sustainability.  Project Application  ARC Review
Honduras, Cruz de Valencia The community of Cruz de Valencia is very lively with pride and is interested in working on a program to improve the quality of life of their community members. The goal of the first project is to improve the bridges in this community. There are two bridges that are used for transporting very valuable merchandise, such as bananas, which can weigh 18 tons. The goal then should be to evaluate the need for sewage treatment and water supply in the community. But currently the bridges are the first priorities. Project Application ARC Review

Kenya, Choimim The Nandi Village project seeks to provide education, shelter, nutrition, psychosocial and vocational training opportunities for the HIV/AIDS orphans and vulnerable children in Choimim community by building two additional orphan houses to host 20 children and their caretakers. It is anticipated that once the entire infrastructure is complete. The village will be home for approximately 50 orphans and many generations will benefit from this facility Project Application ARC Review
Kenya, Chungni There is an acute water shortage resulting in outbreak of waterborne diseases due to the fact that the members of the community drink dirty water from seasonal rivers and springs and children and adults dying due to dehydration. The villagers have dug some shallow wells that unfortunately dry up during dry seasons leaving the community in a hopeless situation. The women have to walk over five kilometers to the nearest borehole to collect clean water. The goal of the project is to design and implement a permanent water supply for domestic use in Chungni- Wiga community. Project Application ARC Review
Kenya, Lela The goal of the project is to provide clean water for domestic use in the community. The scope shall involve feasibility study, design and implementation of a sustainable water supply system in the village. The water project shall improve the health and well being of the community. Hours wasted by women in search of water shall be used for economic activities. The water shall also be used for watering tree seedlings in order to improve the environment. Each person shall be given one tree seeding to plant every week. Project Application ARC Review
Kenya, Malera The goal of this project is to design the rehabilitation of a water supply system. The community wishes to equip the existing borehole with a submersible pump and energy source. The existing borehole is 60 meters deep. The borehole is equipped with a hand pump that keeps on breaking down and is very difficult to operate. The children have difficulties pumping water due to the high amount of energy required. The full potential of the borehole cannot be achieved since the hand pump can only yield a small amount of water. Project Application ARC Review
Kenya, Maseno Maseno Hospital is a Mission Hospital located in one of the poorest areas of Kenya, Western Province. The hospital needs a reliable clean water supply. To date, the Hospital has relied upon (1) municipal water and (2) rain runoff caught in cisterns for water. Municipal water is irregularly supplied and frequently muddy. Runoff is unclean and short-lived during the dry season. Lack of clean water, understandably, leads to more infections in patients and illnesses in staff. Project Application ARC Review
Kenya, Mbita  The goal of this project is to promote community development through education. University education is unaffordable to most students, and few score high enough on the national exams to receive scholarships.  The goal of this project is to build a computer training center for students with solar power capabilities. Project Application  ARC Review
Kenya, Migori  Migori is a town in southern Kenya with a population of about 5,000 people. The town has a water borehole with very limited distribution. The water is supplied by the ministry of water development in Migori. It is only serving the government offices and staff quarters, the hospital and the teachers college. The borehole does not have enough capacity to supply every estate with water. The goal of this project is to provide an appropriate water supply system for the town. Project Application  ARC Review
Kenya, Nairobi Starfish Kenya is seeking EWB’s assistance to provide House of Hope with sanitation and treatment of waste water through the design and implementation of a simple septic system. Kenya, Oloosinon Project Mvua was developed by African Mission Services (AMS) and submitted to EWB with the goal of providing the school children and their families with a source of clean water all year. The proposed water source is a system of gutters and tanks that will collect and store rain water at the school. Project Application ARC Review
Kenya, Samburu The small clinic set up by Segera mission easily sets the highest standards for medical care accessible by the surrounding communities. In the rainy season however a large section of the surrounding community are unable to access the clinic due to the rising waters of a river that lies just North of Segera mission. With no bridges currently constructed near enough for these communities to use – they are totally cut off from quality health care for several months of each year. African Impact is partnering with Segera Mission to construct a small and practical footbridge to provide year round access to Segera. Project Application ARC Review
Kenya, Uluthe Help the Mungao sublocation, a community of 8,000 people, to survey water and sanitation needs and propose possible solutions. Activities include assessing the capacity, water quality and the feasibility of using 2 existing wells or a government designated water point, planning for community wide water distribution that includes alternative energy generation, composting toilets, black water usage and methane gas. Investigate possible supplemental alternatives such as rain water catchments and cistern storage of spring water. Project Application ARC Review
Liberia, Mary's Village The goal of this project is to build a school for the under-privileged children in Timbo District that currently are not in school because their parents can not afford to send them away to the city to go to school. The project may be extended, after assessment, to include implementation. Project Application ARC Review
Mali, Kourouma During the rainy season (May-October), after a heavy rain, a section of road connecting Kourouma to the main highway is washed out making it impossible to pass until the water goes down. There is already a bridge covering one section of this problem area, but it is quickly eroding and after a strong rain, the bridge design does not allow enough water to pass through it. The idea is to build a new bridge in the area to accommodate the fast flow of water and build up the road from the flood plain. Project Application ARC Review
Mali, Sokouroni The village of Sokouroni needs a place to bring their livestock for drinking during the dry season. The project idea is to create a pond where 2 intermittent streams merge during the rainy season. This pond needs to hold water through the dry season so it can be used for livestock drinking all year round. A secondary project is to stock the pond with fish to provide the villagers with a valuable source of protein and additional income. Project Application ARC Review

A survey, conducted by qualified engineers is needed so that recommendations of repairing the walls and bedding where water leaks could be presented for estimate. Repairs will result in the prevention of water escaping back into the river and avoid the environmental hazard of erosion and soiling of the river. Production will increase and the livelihood of the people will be secured. Project Application  ARC Review
Tanzania, Mtwara The project involves providing water harvesting tanks. There is no underground source of water in this area. There is no availability of pressurized water in this area. Water needs to be collected in sufficient quantities during the rainy seasons to last to the next rainy season. Individual families scattered across the student catchment’s area currently send water with their children to school. As the water at home becomes scarce, so do the students attending school.
The Community has secured an 18,000 EURO GRANT FOR PROJECT COST
